The Poor Can't Pay

The Poor Can't Pay Campaign

A range of of C&V organisations and Trade Unions have joined forces to launch a campaign called The Poor Can't Pay to oppose the proposed cuts to basic social welfare payments and the minimum wage. They have invited other C&V organisations and Trade Unions to join the campaign by logging onto www.thepoorcantpay.ie

The Poor Can't Pay campaign has launched a 'Time to Make A Commitment' campaign in which people are asked to make a personal commitment to do everything in their power to prevent further cuts to the incomes of those on social welfare or on the minimum wage. The campaign argues that in the 'Croke Park Agreement' the Government offers a commitment to civil servants that they will face no further cuts in their wages in 2011. However, despite repeated questions the Government is unable to offer those on the lowest incomes the same assurance.
The Poor Can't Pay state that ‘We know that there are more cuts on the way. The Poor Can't Pay is looking for a recognition that those on the lowest incomes in Irish society have already been asked to carry more than their fair share of the burden and their incomes should not be cut further'

'The Poor Can't Pay' called on the Taoiseach today (Monday 11th January, 2009) to give an immediate assurance that there would be no more cuts in social welfare payments and no cut in the minimum wage.

The call came as the campaign coalition launched a detailed analysis titled 'How the Poor Were Made to Pay', which outlines how the 2010 Budget will hit people living in poverty.
